Koine Greek New Testament, the Septuagint, and the Hebrew Old Testament
Thu, 04/15/2010 - 07:44
As it seems more and more people are doing today, I am attempting to study Greek and Hebrew. I'm creating this blog in the hopes that many will share what has been useful for them, so that others will be helped in return. There is another similar topic called "Learning Koine Greek"; I will add the information that I found useful from that forum.
E-Sword is a remarkable program when it comes to learning Biblical language. I'm realizing this more and more each day. There are many modules that are very helpful and I'm convinced more could be made. Here are the modules I am using. All of these modules were either found on this site, on the E-Sword.net site or on DCOX's site: http://www.davidcox.com.mx/e-swordmodules/bibles.html#
GREEK BIBLES:
For Bibles, I feel that the less I look at English versions, the more I learn. I guess you could relate it to a sort of language immersion.
For the Greek New Testament, you could choose from one of these:
Srivner Textus Receptus
Robinson/Pierpont Byzantine Greek New Testament (w/ Strong's)
Textus Receptus Greek New Testament (w/ Strong's)
Westcott-Hort Greek New Testament (w/ Strong's)
Greek New Testament (w/ Variants)
For learning the language, I would use one with the (w/ Strong's) as it will give you the morphological code.
For the Septuagint, I am using a transliterated translation with strongs and morphological code. I am still looking for an LXX with the Greek text (w/ Strong's). Maybe someone could help me with this.
HEBREW BIBLES:
I'm using Hebrew Old Testament w/ Strongs (HOT+). You can find more information about each verb in your KJV(TVM). There are no vowels, though, and so I suggest using the Book form of the OT while you study.
ENGLISH BIBLES :
For the King James Version, I suggest the KJV+TVM Doctordavet wrote : "a King James Version of the Bible, with Strong's numbers for all of the words, plus all of the verbs (both Hebrew and Greek) "declined" with tense, voice & mood. It includes a special TVM dictionary that will have the definitions for all of those verbs that have the special numbers. For language work, I think this particular "double module" is the most important resource tool available for e-Sword (the RMAC dictionary is a close second).KJV + TVM" You can find it here: http://e-sword-users.org/users/node/3925
-English or French Darby, as it is a very literal translation.
-The complete apostle's Bible to help with the Septuagint
DICTIONARIES:
Doctordavet wrote:
"Brown Driver Briggs (for Hebrew, but you'll still want it!)
Thayer's Greek Definitions
Webster's American Dictionary - the best American dictionary ever published!
Some day, when you have $40 extra, you'll want to pick up "The Complete Word Study Dictionary."
I also suggest:
TVM - which should be automatically installed with the link above
English to Greek index
Greek to Hebrew dictionary of the Septuagint words
Strong's for LXX (but v.9 isn't working properly)
COMMENTARIES:
Robertson's Word Pictures
Treasury of Scripture knowledge
Vincent's word study
K & D commentary on the old testament
Darby
FREE RESOURCES:
As for free resources on the internet, I would appreciate any help on this. Here is what I have found so far:
For Greek:
-10 beginners Greek lessons here : http://www.middletownbiblechurch.org/egreek/egreek.htm
-15 Greek lessons here : http://www.inthebeginning.org/ntgreek/index.htm
-Visual Greek (cartoon vocabulary learning) : PDF file: http://library.greekbiblestudy.org/Visual%20Greek/visualgreek1234.pdf
-A free full year video course: http://faculty.gordon.edu/hu/bi/Ted_Hildebrandt/New_Testament_Greek/Vide...
For Hebrew:
- Old testament audio http://www.aoal.org/hebrew_audiobible.htm
BOOKS:
There's one book I strongly recommend you buying: Zondervan's "A Reader's Hebrew and Greek Bible"
"A Reader’s Hebrew and Greek Bible saves time and effort in studying the Bible. Definitions for Greek and Hebrew words that occur less frequently appear as footnotes on every page, allowing the user to read the text quickly and to focus on parsing and grammatical issues (rather than paging through lexicons!). Presented in beautiful fine-grain black European leather."
-It includes a lexicon of all Greek words occurring 30 times or more in the New Testament and all Hebrew words occurring 100 times or more in the Old Testament.
-All Greek words occurring 30 times or less and all Hebrew words occurring 100 times or less are defined as footnotes at the bottom of each page.
-An indispensable tool for all who are seeking to learn and master these languages, currently on sale for about 50 dollars at these two sources:
1: Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Readers-Hebrew-Greek-Bible/dp/0310325897
2. Christianbooks.com http://www.christianbook.com/a-readers-hebrew-and-greek-bible/a-brown/97...
Well, that's all for now. I hope this will be a blessing to someone who is attempting to study Hebrew and Greek. I'm hoping also that others will comment and share what modules or what other resources could be helpful.
Thank you,

Ancient Hebrew
Here is a great YouTube Channel for all things E-Sword, modules, etc. http://www.youtube.com/user/RJBemidbar
They also have a website: http://www.RJBemidbar.com
This is a video they made on Ancient Hebrew modules : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dCoSLDSR0w
The video will direct you to this dialer http://www.rjbemidbar.com/dialer.html
In the dialer, click 0057, then follow the instructions. He will also give you some general comments about the modules. I assure you it is very interesting!
Now, you're going to need another module that you can find on e-sword-users. Follow the instructions though, because you need to install some fonts for it. It is called the Ancient Hebrew Lexicon of the Bible -9.x You can find it here: http://www.e-sword-users.org/users/node/2421
Happy studying!

Here is a post Will Brinson has just made to me in another Forum, thank you Will :)
Hey René,
if you have the LXX+ you can use the extended searh feature and search the Strong's # -
which will yeild results in Strong's Greek Definitions, Thayers Greek Definitions, and the TVM module.
If you have the LXX-BYZ module you can search the words and it will return results in -
1909 New Cathoilc Dictionary, The Catholic Encyclopedia, Fausset's Bible Dictionary, International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, King James Concordance, Robinson's Morphological Analysis Codes, Greek Gloss, Strong's Greek Definitions, Thayers Greek Definitions, Wuest’s Volume #3, The Probert E-Text Encyclopedia, Testimony of Jesus Christ Dictionary, Trench’s Synonyms of the New Testament, and the TVM module as well.
You can also use the "Grk2Heb Dictionary of Septuagint Words" backed by Thayers Greek Definitions and Strong’s Greek Definitions, plus there is a Resource Module called English/Greek Index that can be useful.
If all of the Resource Modules metioned here can not be found on the e-Sword Users site then check out:

Look all through them and you'll find a lot of stuff.
-some you may have to run through the 8 to 9.x Convertor-
Some of these Resource Modules will land in the C:\My Documents,
some in C:\My Documents\e-Sword Folder,
some in C:\Program Files\e-Sword Folder,
and some will land in drive C:,
and then some will land on your Desk Top.
Be sure to convert the ones that need converting and place them unfoldered in drive C:
