PROPOSITION 11. The mysteries of the kingdom were given to the apostles.
This is plainly asserted by Jesus Himself (Mark 4: 11, Matt- 13:11), " Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God," "it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven," which the apostles, including Paul, claimed to have been imparted, Zep_1:9, and 3:3, etc. The entire tenor of the New Test. impresses us, that their superior qualifications as teachers arises from their acquaintance with the doctrine of the kingdom, resulting from the personal instructions received from Christ, and the subsequent special guidance of the. Spirit.
About the Author:
As a youth his eyes were damaged by a gunpowder explosion, and this slowed his college work due to flareups. He did graduate in 1850 and held pastorates in the Lutheran churches in Ohio. Unable to endure the rigors of the winter weather to reach the different churches to preach, and due to persistent eyesight problems, he suffered a physcial breakdown. He settled down to do pulpit supply and to raise funds for the college. Failing health, the onset of deafness, kidney problems, etc. all led to the abandonment of public speaking.
While George was a very poor man in material goods and did not even have the funds to buy the paper to write his incredible treatise on prophecy, his persistence in the face of ridicule is a lesson to any servant of Christ!
